Pit and fissure sealing

Pit and fissure sealing

Protective sealants for grooves on back teeth to reduce decay risk.

Pit and fissure sealing protects the deep grooves on chewing surfaces of back teeth, where decay often starts. A thin protective resin is bonded into these grooves to block food particles and bacteria from settling in hard-to-clean areas.

Molars and premolars have natural pits and fissures that toothbrush bristles cannot always reach. Sealants create a smooth surface that is easier to keep clean and significantly reduce the risk of cavities in these vulnerable zones.

What to expect

The procedure is quick, painless, and usually requires no drilling or anaesthesia. The tooth is cleaned, the sealant material is applied to the grooves, and it is hardened with a special light. Each tooth takes only a few minutes.

Who is it for

Sealants are most commonly placed on permanent molars in children and teenagers as soon as the teeth erupt. Adults with deep grooves and no existing decay or restorations in those areas can also benefit from sealing.

After your treatment

Sealants are durable but should be checked at regular dental visits for wear or chipping. Continue normal brushing and flossing — sealants protect grooves but do not cover the entire tooth surface.
