Core build-up with pins or post
Rebuilding tooth structure to support a crown after extensive treatment.
Core build-up with pins or a post rebuilds a tooth that has lost significant structure, often after root canal treatment or extensive decay. This procedure creates a stable foundation so a crown can be placed securely on top.
When too little natural tooth remains to support a restoration on its own, an internal post or pin helps anchor the build-up material inside the root canal space. The tooth is then shaped to receive a crown that protects and restores full function.
What to expect
The process typically follows endodontic treatment or removal of a large old filling. After preparing the canal and placing the post or pins, we rebuild the visible portion of the tooth with a strong core material. A temporary or final crown may be planned as the next step.
Who is it for
Core build-up is recommended when a tooth is structurally weakened but can still be saved with a crown rather than extracted. It is commonly used on back teeth that have undergone root canal therapy or suffered substantial damage.
After your treatment
Until your crown is fitted, avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth if a temporary restoration is in place. Follow your dentist's instructions on care and attend follow-up appointments to complete the final restoration.
