Fluoridation

Fluoridation

Topical fluoride application to strengthen enamel and help prevent decay.

Topical fluoridation strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent decay, especially in patients at higher risk of cavities. Fluoride is applied directly to the teeth in a concentrated form during a short in-clinic procedure.

Fluoride works by remineralising early enamel damage and making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and dietary sugars. It is a safe, evidence-based preventive measure used in dentistry worldwide.

What to expect

After a routine cleaning, fluoride gel, foam, or varnish is applied to the tooth surfaces. The application takes only a few minutes. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a short period afterward so the fluoride can absorb fully.

Who is it for

Fluoridation benefits children and adults alike, particularly those with a history of cavities, dry mouth, orthodontic appliances, or difficulty maintaining oral hygiene. Your dentist will recommend a frequency based on your individual risk profile.

After your treatment

Continue regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and maintain scheduled dental visits. Fluoride treatment complements — but does not replace — daily home care and a balanced diet low in frequent snacking.
