Retreatment of single-root endodontic treatment
Revision of a previous root canal on a single-root tooth.
Retreatment of a previous root canal on a single-root tooth is performed when the initial endodontic therapy has not healed as expected or symptoms have returned. The existing filling material is removed, the canals are re-cleaned, and the tooth is resealed.
Reasons for retreatment include persistent infection, missed canals, complex anatomy, or a delayed crown placement that allowed reinfection. Retreatment offers a second chance to save the tooth before extraction becomes necessary.
What to expect
Diagnostic imaging helps identify the cause of failure. Under local anaesthesia, the old root filling is carefully removed and each canal is disinfected and reshaped. The tooth is then refilled and sealed with modern endodontic materials.
Who is it for
Single-root retreatment is suitable when the tooth structure is still adequate and the root canals are accessible. Your endodontist or dentist will evaluate prognosis and discuss whether retreatment or alternative options such as extraction and implant are more appropriate.
After your treatment
Complete the recommended permanent restoration — usually a crown — to protect the retreated tooth. Report any persistent swelling or discomfort promptly so we can address complications early.
